APIS MELLIFERA

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the Earth, humans would only have four years left to live".
Albert Einstein, 1879-1955

HOW BAD IS THE SITUATION FOR BEES?
"Apis Mellifera", the European honey bee, is under severe threat.
The numbers, currently available to the public, estimate around 30% of the population of honeybees has disappeared; in some parts of the continent they seem to be extinct.
These numbers derive from before the wildfires in 2021 and 2022 and the drought of 2022. There is no doubt, the decline exceeds the 30%.

WHY ARE THE NUMBER OF BEES DECLINING?
Ploughing of wildflower meadows, turning land into agriculture, pesticides, changing flowering times, food insecurity, insufficient shelter and nesting sites and the overall effects of Climate Change...all these factors play in, in a negative way, to the possibility of the bees to go through their natural cycle.

The way bees are being exploited in farming is appalling, and across the board, farmers are reporting loss of colonies, or disappearance thereof. Bees only live for a few weeks, they work hard, they work together and every year they are deprived of the labour of their work, honey. Bees are exploited to extinction.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO SAVE THE BEES?
We should make every effort to plant wildflower meadows, wherever we can; we should plant flowering plants and bushes, we definitely need more trees to recreate ecosystems and in the cities rooftop gardens for bees should be compulsory on top of all buildings.

And we should immediately start campaigning for making bees an endangered species, which it is. Once that goal has been obtained, a lot of what the bees have to endure today would simply be illegal.
